We were standing on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. The scent of sulfur hung heavy in the air and the constant, deafening roar of steam shooting out of the ground from below was almost like thunder. When I recently visited one of Kenya’s leading geothermal power plants, I did not simply take part in a field trip, I saw the very same future we are building at the Pan-African Foundation For Cognitive and Frontier Technologies (PAF-CFT).
As we watched the massive turbines spinning, driven by the raw, volcanic heat of the Earth itself, it quickly became apparent that this natural process embodies our organization’s mission to “find African answers to African problems” and is consistent with the idea that Kenya, our base country, is a world leader in geothermal energy.
Just as geothermal plants extract heat from native rocks to generate power for the nation, PAF-CFT aims to draw upon indigenous cognitive technologies to generate digital sovereignty throughout the African continent.
How Geothermal Energy Aligns With Our Mission
The experience of visiting a geothermal power plant had a significant resonance with some of our thematic directorates and strategic objectives outlined in our constitution:
1. Climate Resilience & Green Technology: In addition to conducting advanced climate modeling and green technology research as mandated in our constitution, geothermal energy is the ultimate green solution and viewing it in action motivates our efforts to build environmental resilience.
2. IoT & Smart Infrastructure: The complex systems required to monitor steam pressure and turbine health provide a living laboratory for our Internet of Things (IoT) and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) directorates. We envision implementing similar smart systems to better manage Africa’s critical infrastructure.
3. Digital Sovereignty: As Kenya has become energy-independent through geothermal power, our foundation seeks to achieve digital sovereignty. By developing our own artificial intelligence (AI) and frontier tools, we aim to ensure that Africa is not merely a consumer of global technology, but rather the architect of its own future.
4. Applied Research & Innovation: This plant is a “center of excellence” in its own right. It serves to reinforce our objective to create a Pan-African center of excellence for applied research in AI and frontier technologies, where emerging scientific leaders may develop and apply new science to solve real-world problems.
Upon leaving the valley, the steam rising from the Rift Valley served as a vivid reminder that the power to transform Africa is already beneath our feet and within our minds. At PAF-CFT, we are prepared to leverage that “heat” and convert it into the digital energy that will ultimately end poverty and promote universal prosperity across the entire continent.
